I was blessed to be able to spend one month in the Caribbean this February and early March. My girlfriend Karen and I spent the first week in Placencia Belize where we experienced some great flats fishing, cool jungle hiking, river tubing and some amazing local food! From there two of my buddys, Mark Ledden and Steve Brown met up with me in Placencia and we headed north to Dangriga where we caught a boat out to Tobacco Caye, which was our home for the next week. The fishing from Tobacco was good I had two permit hooked and had another waking towards my crab fly but he turned off at the last second. Both permit hooked came off unfortunately but what an experience steps from the Caye on the first day. We had some really tough weather for a good part of the week but we did make it out with a guide a couple days and had LOTS of shots at permit with some hookups and eats but only one landed, along with a few nice bones mixed in. After that I headed to Fly Fish Guanaja for the next week and a half with Steve who operates the lodge. I was just a helping hand for the most part but was lucky enough to get my own boat one day. Within a couple hours I had a permit to the boat, not long after I had another permit which ripped the crab fly up and spit it back out at me! Fly Fish Guanaja has a special place in my heart and is somewhere that I will visit for many years to come. The lodge, the staff and the setting are as good as it gets. Throughout the month I landed two permit in about 8 days of fishing, and had three more that came unbuttoned, I was pretty happy with that considering the weather and the difficulty level of chasing these elusive fish. What a month away, I'll be back to both places next year for sure! Here are some pix from our trip.
